Many of the ingredients used today in animal feed and pet food are not digested thoroughly due to the presence of anti-nutritional factors. Feed compounds including non-starch polysaccharides and galacto-oligosaccharides often pass through the small intestine unabsorbed and are fermented in the hind gut.
